Baseball Room Reveal for Our Middle Kid
A Home Run: Designing Our Son’s Baseball-Themed Room
There’s something so special about designing for our own kids. Getting to reflects their personalities, passions, and the little details that make them feel truly at home is so fulfilling for me. For our middle son, the answer was easy — baseball. He lives and breathes the sport, so when it came time to refresh his room (just in time for his birthday!), we wanted to create a space that felt fun, personal, and timeless.
The Focal Point: A Custom Mural
The star of the room is without a doubt the Wallism “Innings” stadium mural — which connects my son’s love of baseball and the modern and minimalist look needed to pull the room together. For me, the minimalism of this mural is what makes it work. This mural is from Wallism, and it transformed the entire feel of the space with one bold but muted design choice.
Layering in the Details
We wanted the room to feel authentic and full of character, so much of the baseball memorabilia was DIYed or found while treasure hunting at local thrift stores. I found an old Yankees Magazine for $3 at a local thrift and used the photography of Yankee’s stadium from that magazine mixed with a few good snaps from our son’s baseball season in son inexpensive frames from amazon (linked below) to create a mini photo wall.
From old gloves to vintage bats and framed prints of him with his team, these little touches bring history and personality to the design and make it feel special.
For the bedding, we chose the Pottery Barn Teen MLB Quilt — cozy, durable, and polished enough to grow with him. Paired with a rust checkered rug and layered throw pillows (baseball pillow), the bed feels like the anchor of the room. I also love that this quilt includes all of the MLB teams, so we didn’t have to go too hard for one team (sometimes I think that’s where you can go a little cheesy). Plus, my son doesn’t really have a favorite —this is where my husband feels he failed… But I think it’s great! And really makes the design more fun. We completed the room with some inexpensive plaid curtains to pull in some more color.
Organizing the Gear
If you’re a baseball parent, you know the gear doesn’t stop at bats and gloves. The accessories are just as important. From beaded necklaces and number charms to the hard earned championship rings, these little treasures can add up quickly — and without a good system, they tend to end up scattered around the room.
To keep it all in one place, we found this baseball jewelry holder on Amazon. It’s the perfect way to organize and display those keepsakes while keeping his dresser clutter-free.
A DIY Jersey Display
One of our favorite unique touches in this room was a DIY project we came up with to save a little money: a wall-hanging jersey holder. We found a miniature bat at a local thrift store for $5 (like this one), and by screwing it into the wall with a long enough screw, we created a sturdy way to hang jerseys that also doubles as wall art.
If you prefer a ready-made option, Pottery Barn teen has a version here that’s both stylish and functional.
Why We Love These Details
Little additions like this not only make the room more practical, they also help personalize the design. Whether it’s organizing jewelry, displaying jerseys, or finding creative thrift-store solutions, these small touches are what make the space feel special and tailored to him.
The Birthday Reveal
The best part? The timing. We revealed the finished room on his birthday. Seeing his face light up when he walked in — noticing the mural, the details, and the baseball touches everywhere — made the entire project worth it. We were worried that his gift might feel intangible and it might not feel as exciting but he told us a few days letter it was “the best gift ever” which obviously always feels good to hear.
Not the clearest picture but this was his reaction to his room! It was such a fun surprise.
The Finished Space
The final result is a room that celebrates his love of baseball while still fitting seamlessly with the rest of our home. It’s playful, yet elevated — and most importantly, he loves it and feels good in his new space. That’s always the win we’re chasing.
